You never really know what’s going to happen when someone new steps into the Flour Child kitchen… but when that someone is Jeff Gobbels — iconically known for his appearance on Married at First Sight and the man behind the popular cooking page @jeff___eats, you can safely assume things are about to get equal parts loud, messy, and very delicious.
Jeff is a foodie at heart with a love for sharing ideas and recipes with his community. Through his page @jeff___eats, he’s built a loyal following online, sharing recipes, kitchen experiments and his take on seriously good food.
Before the panino hit the grill, we asked Jeff where his love of cooking started.
“I’ve loved cooking from when I was younger. My mum is a great cook and I loved watching cooking videos online too.”
So when Flour Child reached out about collaborating on the new Footy menu, Jeff already had a pretty clear idea of what he wanted to make.
“I love smash burgers and smashed tacos, so when Flour Child reached out I thought a smashed cheeseburger would be perfect for the new Footy menu.”
The panino is essentially everything that makes a smash burger, or the TikTok famous smash tacos, but instead we have put it inside Flour Child’s signature Pinsa Romana paninos.
Layered with melty cheese, tomatoes, pickles, lettuce and Jeff’s burger sauce (recipe up on @jeff___eats), it’s simple, flavour-packed and built for game day, exactly the kind of thing that belongs on the Footy Feed menu.
Which brings us to the next question…
If you’re anything like me, you’re probably questioning what on earth makes the burger patty a smash burger patty? Is it a normal burger but flatter? A burger patty chopped up? Is someone actually smashing the burger patty?
Short answer: it’s a flatter burger that has been smashed by someone on the grill.
Long answer: So the smash isn’t just to add drama to the occasion, it’s what gives the burger that crispy, dare I say fatty goodness that a normal patty just can’t compete with. Instead of shaping the beef into a patty, a loose ball of mince is placed straight onto a screaming hot plate or grill and smashed down.
The smash spreads the meat out nice and thin and gives the beef maximum contact with the hot bounce, or just chasing something ridiculously good with a beer, this is the one.
…what happens when Jeff Gobbels enters the Flour Child kitchen…
Now you know the tea.
A smashed cheeseburger panino was born, the grill got a serious workout and the Footy menu got a new crowd favourite.
