WE DO EVENTS | More Info
If you’re celebrating something, there must be cake. Birthday, hens party, engagement, divorce, surviving another week at work you name it, you deserve to have something iced in your honour. We’re only human, after all.
My co-worker Tess is a serious cake enthusiast (I’m talking cake obsessed). Not just someone who enjoys a slice, but someone who genuinely respects the craft.
So, naturally, I thought we had to give this very important subject the attention it deserves.
Here are five cake trends currently that i feel are necessary to report on and that i think tess would appreciate, as well as how to get your hands on one from the beautiful The Cake Club!
You know the one, heart-shaped, covered in dramatic piping, finished with cherries, bows and a slightly threatening message written in cursive.
Vintage heart cakes have been circling the internet for a while now, but they’re not going anywhere. If anything, they’re becoming even more excessive and we fully support it.
The original versions were sweet and romantic. Now, they’re being personalised with inside jokes, break-up announcements and statements that probably shouldn’t be read by your Nana.
Popular messages include:
The cake equivalent of posting a cryptic Instagram Story? Hell yea.
Perfectly smooth white cakes, thank you for your service. It’s time for something a little weirder.
Kitsch cakes are colourful, playful and proudly overdecorated. Think wonky lettering, clashing icing, hand-piped flowers, polka dots and tiny objects that make absolutely no sense but somehow complete the vision.
Pinterest has reported huge growth in searches for quirky cakes, including flowerpot cakes, oil-pastel finishes and pink-and-red vintage designs. The appeal is that they feel personal not like the same cake you’ve seen at every event since 2019.
Fresh fruit has returned to cake decorating, and this time it isn’t limited to three strawberries placed carefully beside a mint leaf, how demure.
We’re talking overflowing cherries, figs, berries, citrus, grapes and pears, arranged with the kind of casual extravagance that says, “I just threw this together,” despite the fact it took four people and a mood board.
Current cake forecasts are pointing towards fruit-covered designs and large single-tier cakes, bringing colour and texture without needing every centimetre covered in fondant.
It’s rustic. It’s dramatic. And it technically contains fruit, which makes it breakfast, sorry bout it.

Round cakes have had a fabulous run, but the internet has decided it’s time to stretch things out.
Long, rectangular celebration cakes are taking over tables and honestly, they make perfect sense. There’s more room for piping, cherries and candles.
Unlike a traditional cake sitting politely in the corner, the long cake becomes part of the tablescape. Place one down the middle of a long table, light an excessive number of candles and suddenly the whole room is involved.
They’re dramatic, made for sharing and much easier to serve to a crowd. Most importantly, everyone gets a proper slice. No paper-thin birthday portions on our watch.
In this case, size really does matter.
Right, this is one of the newer trends and one I seriously jam with.
Cookies on a cake.
It might not sound particularly life-changing at first. You could even go as far as to call it basic. But it’s all in the arrangement.
People are taking a simple white cake and casually layering cookies across the top and sides, as though they just happened to fall there perfectly. It’s effortless, a little chic, very cute and, most importantly, it’s cookies on a cake.
Why choose between two desserts when you can have both? This is the kind of innovation I want to see more of.
Now, who would I be to introduce you to all these cake trends and then not tell you how to get your hands on one of these puppies?
If you need someone to bring the cake currently living on your Pinterest board to life, meet The Cake Club. Vintage piping, fruit piled high, cookies attached or something completely unhinged written across the top, they’ve got the cake covered.
Then bring it to Flour Child and let us handle the rest. Good food, flowing cocktails, plenty of photo opportunities and a venue worthy of the cake. You get one day a year when it’s officially all about you. Birthdays deserve to be celebrated properly with a good cake, a good venue and absolutely no Irish goodbyes.
Because the secret to ageing fabulously is to throw a goddamn party.
