How to Actually Survive Winter in Melbourne ‘
A completely unbiased guide from your favourite pizzeria and cocktail bar
Seasonal depression is already seeping from my pores and we’ve only just hit June. My skin is crispy (is that weird?), the winter uglies are in full force, and someone really needs to meet me in the middle here. A scheduled stretch of cold, dark, sad days before we finally see the sun again and my washing doesn’t take four working days to dry. We survived the 40 degree days — surely that earns us something.
But I lived in a student flat in NZ so I’m basically a veteran at this point. Draughty windows, no insulation, one sad oil heater between 7 people. I’ve been in the trenches. I know things, trust me.
So here’s my Winter Survival Kit.
Why am I telling you to get a coat? We’re not a fashion brand. We’re a pizzeria and cocktail bar. But I’ve seen you shivering outside our door waiting for your bottomless brunch session and you look cold. Get a coat. The warmth will save a part of your sanity. This is not our area of expertise and we’re moving on.
We collectively remember to do this in October and completely forget by June. But a bunch of something seasonal on your kitchen or bedside table really lifts the vibes more than you’d expect
[I think I’ll go past the florist on my way home just writing this]
Something more alive than you in winter, do it for yourself and do it as often as your bank account or your flatmates can handle.
Cold weather is genuinely underrated as a reason to go somewhere new. The queue is shorter. The vibe is quieter. The bartender has more time for you. Pick a neighbourhood you’ve been meaning to get to, walk somewhere unfamiliar, find a place that surprises you. Some of the best meals happen on a grey Wednesday when you just decided to go somewhere different.
I say embody YOLO.
We’d obviously love it if that somewhere different was us. St Kilda if you’re south. Richmond if you’re not.
Come say hi xx
There is a tier of food that only exists because of heat, time, and someone who knew what they were doing (our chefs). Baked. Bubbling at the edges when it arrives. The exact thing you didn’t know you needed until it’s sitting in front of you.
Case in point: our baked bolognese gnocchi. Crispy on top. Soft pillowy gnocchi underneath. Arriving at the table with the kind of energy that makes everyone stop talking and just look at it for a second with pure lust. This is not diet season content. This is winter. Eat that gnocchi gnocchi babe, and pronto.
Hear me out. It’s dark by 5pm, your serotonin is on vacation, and someone needs to do something about it — and honestly a sweet treat solves all. You know it, I know it. What else do I know? That our new menu item, the Nutella Cheesecake, is a showstopper. It’s truly glorious and it’s just the thing you need for your daily sweet treat. Is daily too much? My opinion? It’s not enough.
The new winter menu is live at Richmond and St Kilda. Bookings via the link. Wet umbrellets go in the corner and for the love of pinsa please don’t forget your coat, it’s cold outside. xx
