NEW YEARS EVE TRADITIONS 2020

New Year’s Eve traditions around the world you need to know about!
New Year’s Eve looks a little different around the world, with everyone celebrating with their own superstitions or traditions (everyone knows about the Time Square Ball Drop with a kiss at midnight). So, with New Year’s eve approaching very quickly, we thought it would be fun to see how some other countries will be bidding farewell to the disaster that is 2020 thanks to Covid.
Let’s start with Italy, the home of our Pinsa Romana…
Promise of new life
Italians associate the colour red ‘rosso’ with fertility and believe that if you them on New Year’s Eve it will help you conceive in the new year.

Luck of the Irish
Ireland has a tradition for the single ladies, not sure why the single men aren’t included in this tradition but, it is said that single women should sleep with mistletoe under their pillows on NYE to help find their future husbands.
Grapes to make your year great!
In Spain, locals eat exactly 12 grapes at the stroke of midnight to honour a tradition that started in the late 19th century. They eat one grape for each month of the year in the hopes that this will bring about a year of good fortune and prosperity.

Out with the old
In Johannesburg people use to throw out old furniture out of their windows at midnight to symbolize casting away old problems and getting a fresh start. It isn’t as popular these days as it is quite hazardous.
Ring away your sins
The Japanese ring their New Year’s bells exactly 108 times throughout Japan for good luck. This tradition, known as ‘Joyanokane’. It is said to rid the 108 evil desires in every person and cleanse the previous year of past sins.
